I have two complaints, after reading a few pages.

First, the Notes included in the text do not have any content. The only thing we see when clicking on it is the repetition of the number. (see the screen grab attached)

And Two : When I highlight a line or a phrase, I can’t copy it ! I can only make a note. But it is a good part of the interest of having a digital copy of a book : to be able to comment and work on extracts and citations.

I suppose the Amazon version of your book would permit this kind of phrase copying… because I noticed this difference before in other books.

Can I ask for a reimbursement of my Apple Books copy so I can buy an Amazon copy to be able to work with it ? And Can I Ask You, as publisher, to signal this very annoying difference in the format of the ebooks, that, nonetheless we pay the same price !

Le 21 octobre je recevais comme réponse :

Hello Gilles,

I am sorry to hear about the difficulty you are experiencing with your Apple version of The Power of Us.  Unfortunately, we are not able to assist with the technical difficulties you are experiencing with Apple. You will need to contact the customer support team at Apple to help resolve your issue or issue a refund.

Thank you,

This is really annoying. I thought the publisher would care to know his books were not as useful and correctly rendered in one of the ebook standards where they are published.

I am sending this reply to AppleBooks, but I suspect they will simply say that it was the choice (or the error) of the publisher ! Because it is not the Book app that does not permit the copying of a phrase. I have read lots of Books from other publishers in this format that don’t block this function.

Thanks for the reply, anyway.

À quoi, Nicole C. (de Hachette Books) me répondait quelques 30 minutes plus tard :

I apologize, Gilles. I understood it to be an Apple specific issue only. I am sending this along to our team that handles ebook files to ask them to review.

Copying a phrase in Books

Some books I bought in Apple Books format can’t be copied (the function « copy » is greyed), but for the SAME BOOK bought in Amazon, the copy function is operating.

I know because I bought two versions of a book a few times : when I want to work with a book, it is pretty annoying not to be able to copy a citation.

The last time I bought a book in Apple’s format that blocked the copy, I contacted the publisher: it was Hachette. They finally answer my complaint: it is the app’s fault !

But it is not all the Books read in the Apple’s app that have this limitation, so…

And why a publisher would decide to limit an Apple version of his book and not limit it in the Amazon version ?

At first I thought it was a gimmick from Amazon… I am, finally, buying most of my books in Amazon’s format because of the limitation of the Apple’s format.

Or… is it another kind of limitation : a kind of counter limiting the proportion of copy you can make in Amazon’s books (I was told) that doesn’t exist in Apple’s format… and the publisher would block the copy function to prevent too much copying ? Is it ?

please can somebody enlighten me ?

Gilles
